Welcome to Night Matters

Welcome to Night Matters, the blog that tracks the state of night in Seattle, Washington. Nighttime is when our bodies renew, when the world goes quiet and dark. Our bodies are designed to react to changes in light levels in order to regulate our circadian rhythms. The rhythm of day to night is the rhythm of our bodies. It is a sacred thing. Night matters.

I created this blog as a meeting and advocacy place for people who want to make sure that night has its place in Seattle and other parts of the U.S. that use LED street lighting, the newer, more energy efficient, brighter, bluer lights that, in my opinion at least, prevent the areas they light from relinquishing day for night.

This blog will cover the social, spiritual and scientific implications of bright, bluer street lighting, what you can do if your house and bedrooms are getting too much of it (short answer: go here and/or call this number (206) 684-7056 and ask them to adjust them for you). It will give readers a place to comment, and if all goes well, it will jump start an advocacy community for getting what I hope is a saner lighting solution for the city of Seattle.

If you are interested in meeting to talk about the streetlights and what we can do to bring back some peaceful dark to Seattle, please email me at erica.ryberg@gmail.com or call 928-308-7650.

Until the next time, remember: It's not so bad to be in the dark.
